8 Simple Ways to Teach Kindness at Home

Kindness sounds simple, yet it is lacking in so many areas of society today. Families are rushed. Teachers are overwhelmed. Even politically, it seems the fight is always on. Simple kindness is getting lost in the mix. How can children learn to treat others with kindness and respect when the adults around them are too busy, stressed and impatient to be kind themselves?

Home is base camp. Home is where we get our values, basic life and relational skills, and where we should get filled up from a busy day. Unfortunately, not every home is like that. In fact, sadly, many homes do not provide a safe haven for family members. So, what can you do to ensure your home IS a safe haven, a place where family members feel LOVED and LIFTED UP, a place of KINDNESS? Here are 8 things you can do

  1. Say “I love you” EVERY DAY to each member of your family.
  2. Give HUGS like they are candy!
  3. Schedule FAMILY TIME weekly.
  4. Give each child at least 20-30 minutes of UNDIVIDED ATTENTION each day.
  5. LISTEN when your kids talk (do not multi-task).
  6. ASK questions instead of ASSUMING what they think or feel.
  7. Use a gentle TONE instead of yelling or being sarcastic.
  8. Have COMPASSION for a hard day.

The old saying “do unto others as you would have them do unto you” has been long lost. It’s time we get back to basics. Treat your children with kindness, gentleness, patience and love, even when you are disappointed, angry or tired. (Note: This does not mean you skip boundaries or consequences.)

Remember that communication is a key element to creating a healthy parent-child relationship, and kindness is a key element to creating healthy communication. So, taking the time to model kindness is a great investment in your child’s future life and happiness, not to mention the added peace you will experience at home.
