“Kids’ News Day”

Have you heard of “Kids’ News Day”? This is an awesome fundraising partnership between the Union-Tribune and Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego. It is supported by neighboring community auxiliary groups and numerous businesses. This is a great opportunity to share with your kids how to support other children, how to contribute to their community, and how to be grateful for what they have.

“Kids’ News Day” only happens once a year. So, on October 23rd, let your kids know to be on the lookout for moms and dads (and kids) selling newspapers. They will be standing on street corners, in front of stores, at schools, etc. For $1.00, you support families in need, while at the same time receiving the regular edition of the Union-Tribune, along with a special section called “Kids’ News Day,” filled with stories and information that will warm your heart, and the heart of your children.

I recommend that your child purchase the paper (as opposed to mom or dad). It can be money you give them, or their own money (depending on their age, etc.). This is such an empowering experience for them. Then, at some point in the day, sit down and actually read “Kids’ News Day.” Let them experience what their money is contributing to. This will give them an experience of empathy, compassion, gratitude, and contribution. This is what parenting is all about!

For more information about “Kids’ News Day,” you may visit www.knd2007.kintera.org. Let’s take advantage of this opportunity to share with our children some fundamental truths about who we are: generous, loving, compassionate, and blessed human beings.

And, a gentle reminder about Halloween … remember to be conscious of what you are asking from your children on Halloween night (and the days that follow). Consider how much “food” they are eating and how much candy (sugar) they are eating. They do not have the same capacity for learning, listening and feeling good when they are eating candy as they do when they are not eating candy. Please take care in setting loving boundaries (with TLC) and utilizing this opportunity to teach your kids about their bodies and what they put in them. Feel free to read the article I wrote last year on this subject, Healthy Halloween. It may provide some helpful hints.

As we embark on the holiday season, let us focus on love, connection and gratitude. These qualities will create memories of warmth and happiness for many years to come!

Happy Halloween!
